Over 100 children from Oman have been treated for thalassemia at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai in the last few years. To mark the successful treatment of 1,000 children including 110 from Oman suffering from thalassemia, the group on Monday announced the opening of its first international Pediatric Thalassemia Clinic at Apollo Hospital Muscat. 

Addressing a press gathering, Dr K Hariprasad, group president, Apollo Hospitals Group, said, “I am delighted to announce the opening of this clinic at Apollo Hospital Muscat to mark the completion of 1,000 Bone Marrow Transplants (BMT) at our hospital in Chennai. “This unique achievement comes with over 100 unrelated BMTs where we have worked with the National Marrow Donor Program in the US, Brazilian and Indian registry.

“We are privileged to offer this service to patients from over 40 countries.” Dr Hariprasad said that the group’s chief BMT consultant Dr Revathy Raj will head the Oman clinic. Dr Revathy, senior consultant, BMT appreciated the state-of-the-art BMT screening programme instituted by Oman’s Ministry of Health. Dr Revathy elaborated on the services that can be availed at Apollo Hospital Muscat including screening facility.

“The disease is most prone in and around Salalah where there are marriages among cousins in tribes.”
